The Cathedral of Thorns is a work of art about Curaçao and is also for the inhabitants of our island. But the Cathedral of Thorns is primarily intended as a work of art from Curaçao. That is why it is being built by local youth, among others, who are working on their own futures at the same time. As such, the Cathedral of Thorns is a social and vocational apprenticeship.
It would be awesome if you too could support us and these young people. Which now you can! As a necessary supplement to the subsidies from sponsors, including the Mondriaan Fund and the Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund Caribbean, the construction is financed with crowdfunding. We welcome any contribution; even a donation of just 1 Euro or Guilder helps.
Block by thorn block
On December 15th, 2012, the symbolic first block of the Cathedral of Thorns was laid by Michèle Russel Capriles, then chairwoman of the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund Caribbean. The construction and maintenance are in the hands of Curaçao youth. They take care of the supply of the sumpiña branches, turn them into building blocks and construct the walls of the artwork block by block. The Cathedral of Thorns has an area size of 20 by 20 meters and is 10 meters high. The artwork is on the grounds of Landhuis Bloemhof.
By purchasing one or more blocks you can even connect your name to this unique project forever. A total of 2,100 blocks of 100 x 70 x 70 cm are required. Will you help us stack up?
